South and central parts of the valley, including around Srinagar and on the way toward Anantnag and Sopore’s mandi country, are full of orchards. You do not need a named “apple garden” ticket. If you stop, ask the person in the orchard. Buy a kilo if they are selling. Do not pick from a tree because it looks unattended.
Blossom in spring is a different visit: pink-white rows, no fruit, colder mornings. It photographs easily and it is still someone’s field.
When
Blossom around March and April, depending on the altitude and the year. Harvest from September into October. By November the story is crates and markets, not trees full of red fruit.
Where
Roadside orchards on the valley floor. A mandi (wholesale market) is interesting and busy and not a place to wander with a suitcase. Go with someone who knows which shed is open.
Doing it well
- Eat one apple in the orchard and one from a Srinagar stall later. The difference is the trip.
- Combine it with Kokernag or the Pahalgam road, not with a separate “apple tour” day unless you like orchards more than average.
Skip these versions
- A winter plan sold as apple season. The trees are bare. Snow on an orchard can be beautiful and it is not the harvest.
