Nishat is the larger theatre of terraces. Shalimar is the more formal axis. Pick the one that fits the hour you actually have. Pari Mahal, above the lake, is a ruin of arches and a view back at the city. It is a sunset walk, not a flower garden, and the road up is a separate little drive.
Tickets are ordinary municipal tickets. The fountains do not run every hour of every day. If they are off, the chinars and the layout are still the design. Do not demand a show.
When
April for bulbs and the start of colour, if the season is on time. Summer for full beds. October for chinar colour, when the flowers are mostly finished and the trees are the point. Winter is a walk among bare structure. Pretty, and not what the postcard promised.
Where
The east shore of Dal, a short drive from the Boulevard. Pari Mahal is on the Zabarwan slope above that shore.
Doing it well
- Go at opening, especially on a weekend.
- Sit on a terrace for fifteen minutes. The garden is a sequence, and the sequence needs a pause.
Skip these versions
- Both gardens plus Pari Mahal plus the old city before lunch.
- A shawl shop “on the way back” that takes forty minutes and was the driver’s real stop.
