A walk in the old city

The old city is wooden houses, mosques, bakeries and working lanes. It is not a themed market. Two unhurried hours will teach you more than a week of meadow car parks.

The courtyard and arched prayer hall of Jama Masjid in Srinagar

Start at Jama Masjid when it is open to visitors, and dress so your shoulders and legs are covered. The courtyard is the architecture. If a prayer is on, wait outside. From there, walk toward the commercial lanes rather than trying to “complete” a loop from a blog map. You will turn around. That is normal.

Khanqah-e-Moula is a short walk if you are already in this fabric of streets. Read the shrine note before you go in. Shops selling dry fruit will find you. You can buy later, from a shop you chose on the way out, after you have seen more than one price.

When

Morning is kinder. Friday noon is the wrong slot. Rain makes the lanes slick and more interesting, if you have shoes that can handle it.

Where

Around Jama Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula and Maharaj Gunj. An auto can drop you at the edge. Do not ask it to drive the last crowded hundred metres.

Doing it well

  • Ask before you photograph a person or the inside of a shrine.
  • Carry small cash. Keep the phone in a pocket in crowds.
  • One bakery stop is part of the walk, not a detour.

Skip these versions

  • A guided “old city tour” that is three shops and a viewpoint.
  • Bare shoulders in a mosque courtyard and surprise that someone objected.
  • Doing it as a 20-minute stop between Gulmarg and the airport.

Questions people actually ask

Is the old city safe to walk?

For a normal daytime walk, yes, with the same attention you would use in any busy South Asian market. If there is a shutdown or a protest called, skip it that day. Ask the hotel that morning. Do not treat a headline from another month as today’s map.
