The bloom is usually late October into November, and it moves with the weather. A field at dawn is the visit: low flowers, red stigmas, people harvesting fast. You may be waved in or you may be asked to stay on the edge. Stay on the edge unless someone working the bed invites you closer. Do not trample a crop for a picture.
Buy a small tin or a small box from a grower or a shop that will tell you the weight in grams, not a story in adjectives. Real Kashmir saffron is a deep red stigma, dry, and costly per gram. Yellow styles mixed in, a damp box, or a price that feels like a bargain are the usual problems. If you cannot smell it and you cannot afford to waste the smallest size, do not buy the large one.

Pampore, south of Srinagar, a short detour off the highway toward Pahalgam. It is not a half-day destination unless the flowers are open.
Doing it well
- Go early. The flowers are picked in the morning.
- Ask this year’s timing in Srinagar the day before. A calendar date from an old article is not a bloom.
Skip these versions
- A highway stall tin as the only souvenir of a season you did not see.
- Confusing Iranian or mixed stock, sold honestly or not, with a field you just walked past. Ask the origin and expect a straight answer.
