Walks that are actually walks

A lot of Kashmir “trekking” sold to visitors is a pony trail of a few hours. Real routes exist and they need days, a guide who is going anyway, and a season. Know which one you booked.

A footpath through pine forest on the way from Pahalgam toward Baisaran

Short and real: the Yusmarg meadow, the Doodhpathri stream, a morning above Aru, Thajiwas when the path is open. These are walks. Wear shoes you can turn an ankle in and still get home.

Longer: the high lakes above the Lidder, and routes toward the Kolahoi side, are trek days with weather, a turnaround time and no mobile signal worth trusting. Do not start one from a Pahalgam hotel at 11am because the pony man said it was “nearby”. Hire someone who lives on that trail, tell a second person your plan, and carry water for longer than the optimistic version.

When

July and August are the dependable high-trail months. June can still be snow. September is excellent until a storm says otherwise. Winter is not trekking season on these routes.

Where

Pahalgam and Aru for the Lidder side. Sonamarg for Thajiwas only, unless you have a separate plan and a guide for anything beyond it.

Doing it well

  • Poles and a layer even in July. The valley floor lies about temperature.
  • Turn around at the time you wrote down, not at the time the view gets better.

Skip these versions

  • Baisaran or a pony meadow described as a trek on a certificate.
  • Starting late, in cotton, with a half-litre of water.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a guide for a meadow walk?

No. For anything above the last tea stall, yes. The fee is cheaper than a wrong ridge.
