Who it suits. Families with children, or adult children travelling with parents. Not a trek group.
What it leaves out. Gurez, phase 2 of the gondola as a promise, pony rides you did not discuss, Sonamarg if anyone gets carsick.
Day by day
- 1
Arrive and play it quiet
Sleep: Srinagar hotel, not a houseboat unless the children are old enough · Airport
A houseboat is awkward with toddlers, wet shoes and a single bathroom. A hotel with heating and a short walk to food is the kinder first night. Boulevard stroll only.
Eat. Familiar food is allowed on night one. Kashmiri meals can start tomorrow.
- 2
One garden
Sleep: Srinagar · Short
Nishat’s terraces are easier to explain than three shrines in a row. Let people sit. The old city can be a short drive past Jama Masjid for those who want it, not a compulsory lane march.
Eat. Bakery stop, which children usually prefer to a long lunch.
- 3
Gulmarg, phase 1 only
Sleep: Srinagar · 1.5–2 hours each way
Tell the children the plan is phase 1. If phase 2 is open and everyone is warm and willing, it is a bonus. A pony is a treat with a price spoken out loud first, not a surprise invoice.
Eat. Snacks you carried. Dinner back in Srinagar.
- 4
Doodhpathri
Sleep: Srinagar · About 2–2.5 hours each way
The easy meadow. Walk as far as the slowest person likes, then sit. This beats a second hill station.
Eat. Picnic. Tea from a stall.
- 5
Pahalgam overnight
Sleep: Pahalgam · 2–2.5 hours
River walk. Betaab the next morning only if the group votes for it. No shame in skipping.
Eat. Early dinner. Kitchens wind down.
- 6
Homeward
Sleep: Out or Srinagar · 2–2.5 hours to Srinagar
If you fly today, leave after breakfast and skip Betaab. If you have a seventh morning, use it in Srinagar for shopping you actually wanted, not a driver-led carpet stop.
Eat. Breakfast, then the road.
Where to sleep
Two Srinagar hotels changes is already one too many. Stay in the same Srinagar room on nights 1–4, then Pahalgam. Parents will thank you more for that than for an extra viewpoint.
