Who it suits. Travellers who have already done Gulmarg, or who know they dislike queues more than they like famous names.
What it leaves out. The gondola, Betaab, and Gurez unless you add nights. You are not seeing “everything else” by skipping the famous places. You are seeing different ones.
Day by day
- 1
Srinagar, old city first
Sleep: Srinagar · Airport
Start with the city, not a meadow. You will be in cars enough this week.
Eat. Old city bakeries tomorrow if you land late. Tonight, rest.
- 2
Old city and a shrine
Sleep: Srinagar · City
Jama Masjid, a lane, Hazratbal at the end of the day for the walk along the water. This is the cultural day. Do not shorten it for a meadow.
Eat. Noon chai, a real lunch, a light dinner.
- 3
Doodhpathri
Sleep: Srinagar · 2–2.5 hours each way
Stream, pines, back before dark. Picnic.
Eat. Food you carried.
- 4
Yusmarg
Sleep: Srinagar · About 2.5 hours each way
The meadow and, if legs and time allow, a start toward Nilnag. Not both Doodhpathri energy and a forced lake.
Eat. Snacks up, dinner in Srinagar.
- 5
Kokernag
Sleep: Srinagar · 2.5–3 hours each way via Anantnag
Garden and spring. Check the south valley is calm that morning. If it is not, swap this day for a second pass at the old city or a houseboat morning. Do not push a drive to prove a point.
Eat. Lunch near the garden, dinner in the city.
- 6
Buffer
Sleep: Srinagar or the road to Gurez · Gurez is 5–7 hours if you go
If Razdan is open and you can spare two further nights, start for Gurez this morning and ignore the flight you do not have. If you fly soon, this buffer is how the week survives a washed-out road. Use it for saffron country in season, or for nothing.
Eat. A wazwan if you are a group of four. Otherwise a favourite from earlier in the week.
Where to sleep
One Srinagar base the entire time. The luxury is not packing. Gurez, if added, is a simple guesthouse and a separate budget of patience.
