Who it suits. Solo travellers and small families who would rather walk and eat than collect lobbies.
What it leaves out. Houseboat markups you did not ask for, overnight Gulmarg, and any activity sold as compulsory. Also Gurez, which is not a budget hack. It is a time commitment.
Day by day
- 1
Settle in one room
Sleep: Srinagar, off the most expensive boat row · Airport
A simple room in Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar or near Lal Chowk. You can visit the lake without sleeping on it. Walk to dinner.
Eat. Whatever is good within walking distance. Ask the person at the desk where they eat, then use your own eyes.
- 2
Old city on foot
Sleep: Same · An auto, then your feet
The cheapest good day in Srinagar is walking. Bakeries, Jama Masjid, a shrine, a bus or auto back.
Eat. Noon chai and bread. A small wazwan is hard to do alone; a meat-and-rice plate is the solo version.
- 3
One paid outing
Sleep: Same · Gulmarg 1.5–2 hours, or Doodhpathri 2–2.5
Share a taxi if you can find the seat honestly, or split one with people you actually trust. Gulmarg phase 1 is the spend. Doodhpathri is the cheaper-feeling day because you are not paying a gondola. Pick one.
Eat. Carry food. Pay for tea.
- 4
A free city day
Sleep: Same · Walking
Hazratbal, the Boulevard, a garden if you want the walk more than the ticket. This is also the day to look at crafts slowly, with no driver waiting and earning a cut. Craft notes.
Eat. Repeat a meal you liked. That is allowed.
- 5
Leave without a new hotel
Sleep: Out · Airport
You never packed a second time. That is the luxury this plan actually offers.
Eat. Breakfast at the same bakery as day two.
Where to sleep
One room. Ask for the price of the room for the whole stay before you agree, including what happens if you leave a day early. Get the heating answer if the month needs it. No names of “cheapest hotels” here, because those lists go stale and this site will not invent a bargain.
