It is the easiest high ground from Srinagar, which is why every day-trip bus ends up in the same car park. The meadow itself is the sight. The second phase of the gondola is a bonus that weather can cancel.
What to do
Phase 1, then decide
Ride phase 1, look at the weather, and only then talk about phase 2. Standing in a queue you cannot see the top of is how afternoons disappear.
Skiing
The beginner slopes near phase 1 are a realistic first day with a local instructor and hired gear. The bowl under Apharwat is not a casual walk in January. Skiing note.
Summer walk
The meadow and the tree line are enough. Khilanmarg is the walk or the gondola, depending on the week. You do not need a pony to say you saw Gulmarg.
Where to eat
Simple hot food
Maggi, rajma-rice and tea carry a lot of Gulmarg meals, especially in winter when the choice shrinks. Eat a proper breakfast in Srinagar if you are only up for the day.
Do not expect the Srinagar bakeries
Noon chai and girda are a Srinagar morning. Pack a little food if you are out on the snow until late.
Where to stay
Simple · Lower market
Basic rooms nearer the road. Easier to reach when the meadow is snowed in. Heat is the question to ask, not the view.
Mid · Near the gondola base
The practical winter address: you can walk to the queue. Confirm the room is open that week; some properties shut in the shoulder months.
Comfortable · On the meadow
Quieter and closer to the grass in summer. In a heavy snowfall this is the road that closes. Do not book a meadow address for a January trip unless you know how you will get there that day.
Local tips
- Sunglasses and a layer you can add at the top. The base can feel mild while phase 2 is a different climate.
- Weekends and holidays from the plains fill the gondola. A weekday morning is a different place.
Easy mistakes
- Promising children phase 2 when the wind has already shut it.
- A pony circuit you did not agree, then an argument at the meadow.
- Leaving Srinagar at noon and expecting both gondola stages and a calm drive back.
