Most itineraries use Srinagar as a hotel night between Gulmarg and Pahalgam. That works if you only want photographs of the water. It wastes the old city, the morning bakeries and the fact that the lake is a neighbourhood, not a backdrop.
Keep Srinagar as home base when you can. Day trips to Gulmarg and Doodhpathri are realistic from here. Pahalgam and Sonamarg are happier with their own night.
What to do
A slow lake morning
Go at first light if you can. The vegetable market is a working market, not a show, and it is mostly done by mid-morning. Houseboats, weed cutters and school boats are the traffic.
Nishat or Shalimar, not both in a rush
The Mughal gardens need an unhurried hour each. Doing both plus the old city plus a flight is how people remember nothing but the car. Read the gardens note.
The old city on foot
Jama Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula and the lanes around Maharaj Gunj are the Srinagar that does not appear on a houseboat brochure. Dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and leave the shopping pitch for later. Old city walk.
Hazratbal
The white shrine on the north shore is a working place of prayer. The walk along the water is the point, not a timed entry.
Where to eat
Bakery morning
Girda, lavasa and tsot with butter, plus noon chai. The Boulevard stalls are convenient and priced for visitors. Bakeries toward the old city are where people actually stop on the way to work. Noon chai and bakeries.
Wazwan, shared
A trami is a meal for a group, eaten with the hand, rice in the middle. It is a poor choice if you are alone, in a hurry, or hoping for a light lunch. How a wazwan meal works.
Winter harissa
In the cold months, harissa shows up early in the old city. It is a breakfast, not a dinner spectacle.
Where to stay
Simple · Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar, Lal Chowk side
Plain rooms off the water. Useful if you want to walk to the old city or you do not care about a lake view. Ask about heating from November.
Mid · Boulevard and the houseboat row
The obvious first-trip address. Look at a houseboat in daylight, ask what the tariff includes, and prefer a boat you can step onto from a proper ghat. Nigeen is quieter than the main Dal cluster.
Comfortable · Boulevard hotels with a generator and heating
Pay for heat, hot water and a car park you can find at night. A “lake view” that faces a parking lane is common; look out of the window before you agree.
Local tips
- Split the lake and the old city onto different days.
- Buy saffron and shawls after you have seen the real thing, not from the first shop a driver mentions. Craft notes.
- Friday noon near the big shrines and Jama Masjid is a prayer time, not a sightseeing slot.
Easy mistakes
- Treating Srinagar as a night between two hill stations.
- A 4pm shikara because that is when the hotel suggested it.
- Packing Gulmarg, a garden and the old city into the arrival day.
