The town is a base for walks more than a monument. The river, the market and one village above it — usually Aru — make a proper day. Betaab is a short, managed valley. Doing all three plus the drive from Srinagar is a blur.

A filmed valley with an entrance, a path and a stream. Go early, stay an hour, leave. Betaab.

Trout
The valley is known for trout. Ask whether it came from the river or a farm that day, and do not treat a menu photo as a promise.
Market breakfast
Bakeries in the main market cover bread and tea. It will not match a Srinagar kandur, and that is fine.

Mid · Along the Lidder
The better default: you can hear the river and still walk to food.
Comfortable · Set back from the market road, toward the quieter side of town
Worth it if you are staying two nights and do not want generator noise under the window. Confirm heating if you are here in late autumn.
Local tips
- Choose Aru or Betaab, not both plus Chandanwari, unless you have a full day and no Srinagar drive.
- The Amarnath route passes through this valley in season. Expect extra traffic and checkpoints in those weeks, and do not plan a quiet meadow walk on the yatra’s busiest days without asking locally.
Easy mistakes
- Arriving at 4pm, ticking Betaab, and calling it Pahalgam.
- Assuming the upper road to Chandanwari is open because the town is sunny.
