The valley is wide, the river braids across the stones, and Thajiwas is a short walk or pony from a car park when the season is on. That is the visit. There is no old city to fill a rainy afternoon.
What to do
The meadow and the river
Even without Thajiwas, the valley floor is the sight. Walk it before you join a pony queue.
Thajiwas
A hanging glacier and a walk of modest length when the path is open. It is not a technical glacier trek. It is also not a guaranteed view in cloud. July notes.
Where to eat
Dhaba food
Tea, rice, dal and noodles from stalls that open with the season. Eat a real meal in Srinagar if you are sensitive to a limited menu.
Where to stay
Simple · Seasonal huts and guesthouses in the meadow strip
Open in season, basic, and the right choice if you want dawn on the river. Many shut when the road does.
Mid · The small hotel row
A proper bed and a heater when the night drops. Book only for dates inside the open season, with a cancellation if the pass report turns.
Comfortable · Srinagar, and Sonamarg as a day
Often the smarter comfort choice. You give up the sunrise and you gain a reliable room.
Local tips
- Carry a layer. The meadow wind is colder than Srinagar on the same afternoon.
- If Zoji La is the headline that week, tourist traffic and army movement change the drive. Ask that morning.
Easy mistakes
- Pairing Sonamarg with Gulmarg on the same day.
- A winter brochure that still lists Thajiwas as if the road were a formality.
