Gurez

Gurez sits north of Bandipora, over the Razdan Pass, along the Kishenganga. It is one of the few places on a Kashmir trip that still feels like you left the tourist circuit. It also falls apart if you treat the pass as a formality.

Dawar, the main settlement, looks up at Habba Khatoon. The river is the main street of the landscape. Villages are the visit, not a mall or a gondola. You come for two nights or you do not come.

Walk the settlement, look at Habba Khatoon in the evening light, and resist filling the afternoon with a drive just to say you moved.

A village, not a list

One nearby hamlet is enough. Ask locally which road is open. Do not invent a circuit of five villages on a map.

Home-style meals

Rice, veg, occasionally meat, tea. If you need a particular diet, carry food from Srinagar. There is no restaurant scene to browse.

Simple · Guesthouses in Dawar

The realistic option: a clean room, a meal, a blanket. Luxury is the wrong word for this valley.

A private bathroom and a heater if the night is cold. Confirm the week of travel. Do not prepay a non-refundable stay when the pass report is bad.

Comfortable · Srinagar, before or after

Keep your comfortable nights in the city. Gurez is a simple stay on purpose.

  • Cash. Do not assume a card machine.
  • A torch, a layer, and any medicine you actually need.
  • Read the pass note before you promise the photos. Razdan and plans is a draft in the notebook; the live version of this page is the one to trust until that is published.

  • A Srinagar–Gurez–Srinagar day. People try it. They see the inside of a car.
  • Combining Gurez and Sonamarg in 48 hours.
  • No plan B for the day the pass closes.

At a glance

  • Best timeA short window, roughly June to September, and only while Razdan is open. A landslide or an early snow report cancels the week. Build a buffer day in Srinagar that you are willing to spend somewhere else.
  • How longTwo nights minimum. One night means you drive, sleep, and drive, and you will not like the valley. Three nights if you want a village morning that is not a departure.

Getting there

Srinagar to Dawar is commonly 5 to 7 hours via Bandipora and Razdan, longer if the pass is slow or a convoy is moving. This is not a day trip.

Carry photo ID. Checkpoints are normal. Rules for permits and overnight stays change; ask in Srinagar the week you go, not from a blog from last year, including this one.

Local transport

Hire a vehicle that is willing to do the pass and to wait overnight, or confirm a local car in Dawar before you need it. Fuel and workshops are not Srinagar-like.

Mobile signal is patchy. Tell someone your plan before you lose the network, not after.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a permit for Gurez?

Expect ID checks, and ask about the current overnight rule before you leave Srinagar. The requirement has changed more than once. Carry the ID you were told to carry, not a screenshot of an old checklist.

Is Gurez safe to drive?

The road is a mountain pass, not a highway stroll. Go in daylight, in season, with a driver who has done Razdan. Do not start the climb late to “make up time”.
